Seemingly paradoxical, metabolic rate is actually increased in short-term fasting. For some concrete numbers, studies have shown an increase of % – 10% after 36-48 hours ( Mansell PI, et al , and Zauner C, et al ). This makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. Epinephrine and norepinephrine (adrenaline/noradrenaline) sharpens the mind and makes us want to move around. Desirable traits that encouraged us to seek for food, or for the hunter to kill his prey, increasing survival. At some point, after several days of no eating, this benefit would confer no benefit to survival and probably would have done more harm than good; instead, an adaptation that favored conservation of energy turned out to be advantageous. Thus metabolic rate is increased in short-term fasting (up to 60 hours).

The results have been absolutely fantastic for me, but that does not mean that intermittent fasting will work for everyone. It is really important that they do more trials on humans to find out if in the long term it is safe and effective. But having experienced intermittent fasting, I plan to go on doing it. It seems to have undone some of the damage that I have done to my body down the years. Before he chose his particular form of CT, Dr. Mosely’s body was just under 30% fat, though if you saw him, you’d be surprised, because he doesn’t appear fat. He also had:

Without fasting there is no “break(ing of the) fast”! Our diurnal metabolic rhythm is geared towards cyclic fasting and feeding patterns, where the feeding hours have always been shorter than the fasting hours.  [More proof that eating at night is okay. ] Can I skip dinner instead of breakfast? Click to expand Well… honestly you could do whatever you damn well please but I wouldn’t recommended it because your biological feeding time is at night. Here’s a clip from this article that explains why eating in the evening and letting the foods process all night when you’re resting at night is what your body is set up to do as opposed to during the day.

I’ve been intermittent fasting as a lifestyle for over seven years and didn’t know what it was called or the benefits of it. I just didn’t want to think about food and when I ate I wanted to eat whatever I wanted, which surprisingly wasn’t sweets. I would regularly have huge cheese laden pasta dinners and not gain weight. I never felt deprived, but I really didn’t eat vegetables or fruits which left me, you guessed it, constipated. I’m now eating more veggies, but usually cover them in butter, cheese and bacon. Thank you for the info!
